Backpacker Magazine - Hike the John Muir Trail In a Week DT's recommended reading -- with the caveat we expand this hike to two weeks.

Friends who have trekked the AT and are off to Bhutan to hike the Snowman Trail think we're nuts to go 20 a day. "No fun" is what they say. 16, 17 miles a day average is what I am thinking this will work out to be for me.

So I may end up starting with the DT Express and find myself on a solo pilgrimage up Whitney. Lots of time between now and then to figure it out.

Ten Tips to Ultralight Backpacking: John Muir walked this terrain with just about nothing but his poetic sense of place and a prayer. Since we're going faster than the average bear and want to have some fun, it means getting lighter with everything. Razor blade instead of a knife for instance. Gregory Baltoro 70 is the new new bag

Here is my latest pack for the John Muir Trail: Gregory Baltoro 70. It is heavier than the Granite Gear I have been looking at, and has a bigger capacity.

And it can double as my gear bag on trips back east to the Adirondacks.

I like reviews I have read, including Backpacker Magazine backpack of the year. I'm getting it at REI -- simply as a thank you to the guy who spent 30 minutes fitting me with it and comparing it to a couple other bags I was looking at. It is pretty spendy-- $269 without discounts, so I can still change my mind.
