JMT 50 mile Wrap Up

Got back from yosemite last week.

Great hike-- abbreviated a bit by smoke and forest fire that went out of control, cutting off our access to Yosemite Valley from Mammoth Lakes via shuttle.

I hiked 50 miles and had a blast -- we averaged 8-9 miles a day to our destination and then added a couple miles a day on top of that over 5 days.

Here is the biggest surprise: Felt stronger on the fifth day than the first.

Got great gear -- what took forever to decide on the right boots finally worked out great-- bought a pair of Scarpa Kailish GTC from Second Ascent in Ballard (n Seattle)

Dave T got me into toe socks, which I put another thin sock over and got the perfect fit.

Brennan at Second Ascent turned me onto some simple ways to tie my laces to my feet didn't slide going down hill.

and the poles I bought -- Life Links -- worked out great. Oh yeah-- body glide on my feet every day reduced friction.

And there is so much to see I do not recommend fastpacking this area of the world. Each 6-10 miles on the JMT has some cool country to check out, some beautiful flora and fauna, lakes or rivers to stare at, life's web to ponder. And side trails we found led us to glorious secluded camps we would never have found any other way.

Can't say enough about the good company I had with Tom and Hugh hiking with me.

We (being swimmers) all jumped in some mighty cold water on the trip-- but what did you expect from 8K-11K ft?

Going back for another leg-- 50 miles from Devil's Postpile to Florence Lake or further next year.

Can't say enough about back country in Yosemite, the forests, wilderness areas we hiked through. You gotta go!

BackpackingLight.com -- Forum Profile

Ouch! Fastpacker trail runner Al (see post below for his detailed gear and JMT food trail plan) worked out to be a painful experience. Blister city, intestinal gut wrench. And did I mention cold and big winds at 8000 ft?

I think this is all mid September.

Food for thought.

Meet My New Backpack: Golite Pursuit-- of happiness I hope

GoLite Product Detail

After a few months of near certainty that I am going with the Gregory Baltoro 70 -- the Cadillac deFille of backpacks -- I have shifted. I bought a used Gregory pack that is 5.5 lbs on Craig's List for $50. I loaded it up with 40 lbs of groceries.

I was floored. No way do I want to carry that much stuff into the wilderness on the JMT.

The winner for the Ides of March Pack of the Month? is GoLite's Pursuit. Looks like it has everything I need.

Lighter by 3.5 lbs.

Smaller -- which makes sense for the long haul -- many more overnights, two day hikes in my future and not so many 10 day blitzes.

Best of all -- it has a relatively cool design and comes apart. The top of the bag doubles with the removable belt as a fanny pack.

So it will fit in nicely with my future trail runs up in the Green Mountains, Adirondacks, and Cascades out here near home.

It got a good review in Backpacker Gear Magazine.

Now if I could just find my shoes. - Leaning toward Keens just because they have a bigger toe box.

Meanwhile, I am walking around wet Seattle in some nice Teva low cut bookts -- $100+ online I picked up at Ross Dress For Less for $22.

That is the other thing I like about the GoLite Pursuit -- $150 v $289 @ REI for the Gregory.

Gregory seems to have missed the part where we're in a Depression. Zero sales.

Maybe their customer base is insulated (so far) from the economic flux.

Hope the Golite has the straps I need.

Basta.

What's in your emergency kit for the trail -- Jute?

This picture made zero sense until I read the thread here at Backpacking Light.

Wilderness Permit Schedule

Yosemite National Park - Wilderness Permits Reservation Window (U.S. National Park Service)

This is a handy table showing you when to apply for wilderness permits for the JMT.

The large group we were going to have on the trail is now three, so I don't think it will be a big deal.

The Park distributes 50% of its permits ahead of time and 50% day of hike.

Since we're going on prime time, we'll be up early making calls.

best fishes,

Timothy

PS: I am thinking about making a new version of the JMT Harrison Maps-- making a field guide of the backs of the map to show flora and fauna. May go down to Yosemite in May to see what it's like with the wildflowers out in bloom.

Zen Stoves

My friend Pete recommended Zen Stoves for use on my trip.

Right now I am leaning against a stove and even a tarp. May try to get the weight down to under 30 lbs including bag. pack, pad.

Water should be abundant, and DT says there won't be skeeters.

Let's hope so. I may bring a net for my face -- just in case.

Tarptent Ultralight Shelters Photo Gallery

These tarp tents look just about right for me. A bit more to them than a stick and a poncho -- should I just get a Go Lite Tent?

Probably not-- a light tarp, some walking sticks, rope, and a thick pad to lay on. Oh-- and this bivy sack

Backpacker Magazine - Hike the John Muir Trail In a Week

Backpacker Magazine - Hike the John Muir Trail In a Week DT's recommended reading -- with the caveat we expand this hike to two weeks.

Friends who have trekked the AT and are off to Bhutan to hike the Snowman Trail think we're nuts to go 20 a day. "No fun" is what they say. 16, 17 miles a day average is what I am thinking this will work out to be for me.

So I may end up starting with the DT Express and find myself on a solo pilgrimage up Whitney. Lots of time between now and then to figure it out.

Ten Tips to Ultralight Backpacking: John Muir walked this terrain with just about nothing but his poetic sense of place and a prayer. Since we're going faster than the average bear and want to have some fun, it means getting lighter with everything. Razor blade instead of a knife for instance. Want to learn about ways to cut your backpack weight to 15 lbs to cut pack weight?

Basta.

Gregory Baltoro 70 is the new new bag

Here is my latest pack for the John Muir Trail: Gregory Baltoro 70. It is heavier than the Granite Gear I have been looking at, and has a bigger capacity.

And it can double as my gear bag on trips back east to the Adirondacks.

I like reviews I have read, including Backpacker Magazine backpack of the year. I'm getting it at REI -- simply as a thank you to the guy who spent 30 minutes fitting me with it and comparing it to a couple other bags I was looking at. It is pretty spendy-- $269 without discounts, so I can still change my mind.

Basta.
